The Azalea Knit Headcover

If you’ve ever watched the Masters and felt that pull towards the blooming azaleas lining the fairways, this pattern was made for you. The Azalea Knit Golf Headcover set is a three-piece collection designed to bring a little Augusta magic to your golf bag.

Worked in the round with a simple colourwork motif, this set is listed as intermediate, but don’t let that put you off. If you’re a confident beginner looking to try something new, you’ll be just fine.

The driver cover features an azalea motif that can be worked in Fair Isle or added afterwards using duplicate stitch, so you can choose whichever method suits you best. The Fairway Wood is finished with a crochet azalea, which can be swapped for a classic pompom or tassel if you prefer to keep things simple.

Skill Level

Intermediate. This pattern uses colourwork, knitting in the round, duplicate stitch, increases, and decreases. There is also an optional crochet azalea, which uses basic crochet stitches.

Finished Sizes

All measurements are taken at the widest point and the length excludes any finishing embellishments like poms, tassels, or crochet azaleas.
Hybrid: 27 cm × 9 cm (10.5 in × 3.5 in)
Fairway Wood: 27 cm × 11 cm (10.5 in × 4.25 in)
Driver: 32 cm × 14 cm (12.5 in × 5.5 in)
Crochet Azalea: 7 cm × 7 cm (2.75 in × 2.75 in)

Needles & Notions

  • 4.5 mm double pointed needles (US size 7) or a long circular needle for the magic loop method.
  • 1 Stitch marker (or scrap yarn tied in a loop)
  • Darning needle
  • Mini pom maker (optional – you can also use a piece of cardboard to create a pom or tassel)
  • 4.0 mm/G crochet hook (optional – only needed if you want to make the optional crochet azalea)

Yarn

I used Cascade 220 (100% Peruvian Highland Wool, 220 yds / 200 m per 100 g skein, medium weight / size 4). The amounts listed below are enough to make the full set of 3 headcovers. Note that natural fibres will pill over time with use. If you’d prefer a more durable finish, substitute with an acrylic yarn.

  • Colour G (Green): 150 yds / 140 m (70 g) — 8894 Christmas Green
  • Colour W (White): 25 yds / 23 m (10 g) — 8010 Natural
  • Colour L (Light Pink): 45 yds / 41 m (20 g) — 9477 Tutu
  • Colour D (Dark Pink): 30 yds / 27 m (15 g) — 7802 Cerise
